TOPEKA, Kan. (July 2, 2018) -- The SCCA® Board of Directors has approved the new Solo Spec Coupe (SSC) autocross class as Championship-eligible just in time for the 2018 Tire Rack Solo® Nationals taking place Sept. 3-7 at Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln, Nebraska.
With the addition of SSC, there are now nearly 80 Championship-eligible classes that can participate at the annual Solo Nationals. Howard Duncan, SCCA’s Rally/Solo Senior Director, stated that Championship-eligible class winners receive a trophy, a special Champion’s jacket, and are notated as class Champions in the official Solo Rules.
“New in 2018, the SSC class has been very well received across the country,” Duncan said. “More than 100 SSC kits have been sold through Tire Rack to date, so we anticipate this will be a well-attended and very competitive class at this year’s Tire Rack Solo Nationals. I’m betting the class will be a lot of fun for drivers and produce a lot of excitement.”
SSC was developed to be unique in that it primarily focuses on a competitor’s driving skill by having racers participate in nearly identical cars. The base platform selected by the Solo Events Board is the 2013 to 2016 Subaru BRZ or Scion FR-S. The models were selected because the cars are modestly priced, rear-wheel drive, late-model enthusiast vehicles useful as both a “daily driver” and for autocross competition. Vehicles must compete using sanctioned upgrades available only through Tire Rack, SCCA’s SSC Performance Package coordinating partner.
Registration for the 2018 Tire Rack SCCA® Solo® Nationals opens July 2, 2018, at 6 p.m. Central Time. For more information about the SSC class, visit https://www.scca.com/pages/solo-spec-class. For more information about Solo Nationals, visit https://www.scca.com/pages/national-championship.
